Dead Horse Ranch State Park is one of Arizona’s incredible state parks and a natural getaway located on Verde River in the Verde River Greenway region. The developed portion of the park measures more than 400 acres, at an elevation of 3300 feet.

The park boasts a network of trails that span more than 20 miles, providing ample space for outdoor activities. Whether you’d love to go hiking or prefer the thrill of mountain biking, there is plenty of reasons to explore this park. Despite the park’s name, it is actually a great place to enjoy horse-riding.

The Verde River flows through the park, allowing for dozens of water activities for visitors to enjoy. Some of the popular activities here include kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and fishing. There are excellent fishing opportunities for both new and experienced anglers alike, with some of the fish species that thrive here, including the Catfish, Bluegill, Crappie, as well as Trout. A valid fishing license is required for anglers above 14 years old.

A tour of the park would be incomplete without exploring the Verde River Greenway. This area encompasses more than 1000 acres of riparian land and is home to different bird species and wildlife. Look out for the raccoons, bobcats, coyotes, and deer. If you are lucky, you may even spot a mountain lion. Other endangered species that the habitat supports include the Southwestern bald eagle and the river otter.

The park also features numerous camping sites complete with water and electricity for RVs. Camp amenities include potable water, flush toilets, showers, as well as a dump station. Additional accommodation is available with more than eight cabins, which feature bunk beds, full-size beds, and a covered porch – visitors are required to carry their own bedding.

Other scenic attractions near the Dead Horse Ranch State Park include the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Area, Red Rock State Park, and Mingus Mountain, located in the iconic Prescott National Forest.
