Havasu National Wildlife Refuge

The Havasu National Wildlife Refuge is a world-renowned destination that provides a habitat for migratory birds and other endangered wildlife species.

Originally named the Havasu Lake National Wildlife Refuge, the refuge spans more than 35,000 acres and is one of the few remnant natural stretches that surrounds the Colorado River as it courses through the Topock Gorge.

The refuge’s incredible biodiversity makes it an excellent destination for nature lovers looking for a break from the city. The refuge is a birdwatcher’s hotspot as it is home to over 300 bird species. From Clark’s Grebe dancing on the surface of the Beal Lake to the Yellow-Billed Cuckoo calling out among the Freemont trees and the Flycatchers perching among the Mesquite trees, there is every reason to enjoy birdwatching at the refuge.

Wildlife viewing is also a popular activity at Havasu, with species that include bobcats, coyotes, the desert bighorn, and the foxes that roam the plains. Look out for the snow geese that abound in the plain fields across the refuge, and if you are lucky, you may spot the mountain lions as they roam around.

The Havasu National Wildlife Refuge provides the perfect setting for a myriad of recreational activities. Topock Gorge is famous for its breathtaking scenery and boating opportunities. The Gorge is accessible from either side, and nothing compares to a boating adventure on the river’s clear waters! Boat rental and guided tours are available.

There are several places to practice your fishing skills at the refuge, and with an abundance of catfish and bass species, there is every reason to go angling on the Colorado River. Other water activities include canoeing and kayaking.

Hunting is another popular recreational activity at Wildlife Refuge. Visitors get to enjoy the Pintail Slough Waterfowl Hunt held seasonally. With excellent opportunities for photography as well, this refuge is one of the top destinations in Arizona.

Camping is prohibited on-site, but there are several accommodation options that include camping grounds, lodges, and RV parks nearby at Lake Havasu City.

Havasu National Wildlife Refuge is an idyllic recreational destination with activities for the whole family.
