Red Cliffs National Conservation Area

The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area is a vast 60,000-acre reserve located in southwest Utah.

Home to complex desert ecosystems, scenic views, and rare flora and fauna, it is easy to see why this protected area is a popular destination for nature lovers.

The delicate balance with which the varied ecosystems sustain life in the reserve makes for the perfect backdrop for an outdoor adventure. Part of the reason for this is that the reserve represents an intermediate zone – the transition between the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert.

The result is a mix of flora and fauna that represent all the different geographical locations. More importantly, the reserve was established to protect endangered species of birds and animals that thrive in harsh conditions.

Red Cliffs National Conservation Area is largely divided into two key regions: the Upland and the Lowland. The Upland is a diverse land that provides the perfect opportunity to go hiking, horse-riding, and off-trail travel, all without destroying the environment. It is perfectly suited for outdoor recreational activities, thanks to its established camping sites available here.

On the other hand, the Lowland region is a fragile zone for which conservation efforts have been made to protect the ecosystem. This zone is open for nature enthusiasts, but it is essential for visitors to only use established trails as part of the good practices of leaving no trace behind. This also includes staying at designated camping sites across the reserve.

In addition to the two zones, visitors also get to enjoy the popular Snow Canyon State Park, which is a treasure trove for nature enthusiasts. The park is home to a handful of hiking and biking trails, and it is not uncommon to see adventure seekers exploring the reserve.

There are many family-friendly options, including the soft sand dune, the City Creek Area, as well as the Millcreek area. These spots provide the quintessential desert experience and are the chance to see some of the reserve’s rare animal species.

Red Cliffs National Conservation Area is an idyllic destination for the whole family!
